We ask students to analyze an author’s use of argumentative strategies, but find that students themselves struggle to produce their own argumentative writing. In response to student areas of growth in writing, we’ll share how we use the Mentor Text Inquiry Process to explore how to engage students in productive struggle and foster the creation of stronger, more developed arguments. Participants in this session will understand how intentionally chosen mentor texts help student writers practice authentic patterns of learning, build writing identity, make authentic writing choices, and face future writing challenges.
