Attend: 7-12th grade math teachers

Content: Rich Task from Discrete Math field (task still being narrowed down)

Our session will aim to show teachers a new way to deliver mathematical experiences to students. Collaboration is the name of the game. In order to create a meaningful experience for students we need to have genuinely interesting tasks for students to work on together. Our session hopes to further move our teachers away from the "I do, we do, you do" failed paradigm and toward a classroom filled with student voice, productive struggle, and an appreciation for the beauty of mathematics. To reshape our future, the future of our community, we need to step into the students' modern world and meet them where they are. We hope to allow our participants an authentic experience as learners of mathematics so they can better empathize with their students. A teacher who understands the motivations of their students will be much better prepared to help them to shape their futures.

We will use our 75-minutes to advocate for equity for all students. We want to highlight the many ways we, as teachers, affect student equity, for better or worse. We will highlight how, in our everyday work with students, “equity” is how we choose to launch our lesson, whose ideas to amplify, how we support multiple languages, how much think-time we allow students to have, and how we synthesize multiple perspectives of the same mathematical phenomenon. We should regularly employ the 5 practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematical Discussions (Smith and Stein, 2011). We must pay close attention to opening up time to think, using structured student interactions like “think-pair-share” and reciprocal teaching. Physically, our classroom should be set up for collaboration. They need to provide space around the room to work out their ideas and be given ample time to wrestle with the mathematics before any conclusions are discussed. Teachers must strive to create an environment where all students feel a sense of belonging. Ultimately, equity is a question of status. “Equity” in the classroom means maintaining a culture of respect and collaboration where all students are of equal status. When students feel included, they are more likely to engage in an authentic and meaningful way. In Teaching for Robust Understanding (TRU) Framework (Schoenfeld, A. H.) one of the five dimensions for creating a powerful classroom is equitable access to content. All teachers want to deliver classroom activities that support and invite all students to actively engage with mathematics. In our session we will ask those in attendance to engage
