Do's, Taboos and Superstitions- Room #1803
Monday July 22, 2024 8:00am - 9:30am PDT
Any teacher working with immigrants or students of a different cultural background should attend this presentation. Culture does not stop at the classroom door. Students bring their culture into the classroom. If teachers do not have an understanding of different cultural norms, it doesn't matter how good their lessons are. Students need, first and foremost, a safe learning environment. If students do not feel safe or that they themselves are not understood or valued, learning will be impeded and outcomes will be low if not dismal.
My presentation teaches teachers to have greater awareness and sensitivity to cultural norms around the globe. Having an understanding of a variety of culture differences can make the difference between a good educator and a great educator.
Participants will play a game which challenges their knowledge of Customs, Festivals & Holidays (like Ramadan, Chinese New Year, Passover, Holi, etc.), Superstitions, Food & Drink, and Do's & Taboos in 90 countries around the globe.

Reshaping the Formula: Dynamic Strategies for Modernizing Mathematics Teaching in an Evolving World- Room #209
Monday July 22, 2024 8:00am - 9:30am PDT
Attend: 7-12th grade math teachers

Content: Rich Task from Discrete Math field (task still being narrowed down)

Our session will aim to show teachers a new way to deliver mathematical experiences to students. Collaboration is the name of the game. In order to create a meaningful experience for students we need to have genuinely interesting tasks for students to work on together. Our session hopes to further move our teachers away from the "I do, we do, you do" failed paradigm and toward a classroom filled with student voice, productive struggle, and an appreciation for the beauty of mathematics. To reshape our future, the future of our community, we need to step into the students' modern world and meet them where they are. We hope to allow our participants an authentic experience as learners of mathematics so they can better empathize with their students. A teacher who understands the motivations of their students will be much better prepared to help them to shape their futures.

We will use our 75-minutes to advocate for equity for all students. We want to highlight the many ways we, as teachers, affect student equity, for better or worse. We will highlight how, in our everyday work with students, “equity” is how we choose to launch our lesson, whose ideas to amplify, how we support multiple languages, how much think-time we allow students to have, and how we synthesize multiple perspectives of the same mathematical phenomenon. We should regularly employ the 5 practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematical Discussions (Smith and Stein, 2011). We must pay close attention to opening up time to think, using structured student interactions like “think-pair-share” and reciprocal teaching. Physically, our classroom should be set up for collaboration. They need to provide space around the room to work out their ideas and be given ample time to wrestle with the mathematics before any conclusions are discussed. Teachers must strive to create an environment where all students feel a sense of belonging. Ultimately, equity is a question of status. “Equity” in the classroom means maintaining a culture of respect and collaboration where all students are of equal status. When students feel included, they are more likely to engage in an authentic and meaningful way. In Teaching for Robust Understanding (TRU) Framework (Schoenfeld, A. H.) one of the five dimensions for creating a powerful classroom is equitable access to content. All teachers want to deliver classroom activities that support and invite all students to actively engage with mathematics. In our session we will ask those in attendance to engage

Strategies for student success- Room #406
Monday July 22, 2024 8:00am - 9:30am PDT
All teachers should attend to help students use common strategies across every discipline. They will identify strategies that will be effective in their own classes based on instructional goals, nature of lesson, and how students need to interact: tying in goals with outcomes or skills (written/oral, cognitive, psychomotor). I will be sharing AVID strategies and materials to discuss with PLC team. Identifying the learning goals, how to present material, assess, provide feedback, and improve retention requires discussion of student needs to motivate both teachers and learners. Knowing what to bring to your own classroom and share at PLC meetings will help teachers meet student needs.

This session will be geared toward any STEM teacher who wants to use real-world phenomena to engage students in their lessons. Phenomena-based teaching aims to cover content standards by first posing questions that students can connect with. Often, students have observed these phenomena but never questioned their causes or deeper implications. By employing the Socratic method and asking probing questions, teachers can gain insight into students' perceptions and misconceptions about a topic. Moreover, when students realize that others share similar insights, they can feel more comfortable discussing their understanding of a topic in a safe space.

Science teachers, but more specifically chemistry teachers. They will learn about how to change instructional approaches to ensure the use of 3-dimensional teaching with NGSS. In particular they will see how phenomena can be used to DRIVE a unit. This will include examples of how to introduce a phenomenon, create initial models, perform a Driving question board, and use the activity summary board to keep track of learning throughout the unit. Participants will get to put on their learner hat to experience this as a student (in a very quick approach) as well as have a chance to look at each of the instructional approaches I use. I will present on my earth's energy unit (which is a tricky one for chemistry teachers who are new to NGSS). This will help teachers to get a better picture of how to implement NGSS and hopefully help them see the benefits of its use for both the students and the teachers (much more engaging lessons!).

El museo de la arquitectura - Room # 613
Monday July 22, 2024 8:00am - 9:30am PDT
Who should attend and why? Any WL teacher that teaches Spanish because this workshop will transform a classroom into a museum, which will be a lot of fun and very innovating. Using a thematic unit or thematic instruction also known as project approach involves organizing the curriculum around a theme or a rich and engaging topic that crosses all learning domains—for example, history, literature, art, cultures, social skills, and receptive and expressive language development. With thematic instruction, a class explores a theme together over a few days, weeks, or months helping students learn and understand the content better. Do's, Taboos and Superstitions- Room #1803
Monday July 22, 2024 9:45am - 11:00am PDT

Standing Whiteboards Contribute to a Culture of Shared Knowledge- Room #401
Monday July 22, 2024 9:45am - 11:00am PDT
The goal of this workshop is to demonstrate how standing whiteboards can benefit any content area by creating a space where people can "mobilize the knowlege" in the room. All participants will engage in thinking tasks at standing whiteboards, just like students. It is our intention to have thinking tasks that can be used in different content areas. Research shows that when students are problem solving at standing whiteboards engagement increases significantly. Each group has one marker and the person with the marker writes ONLY the thoughts of their peers. This increases the opportunity for group discussion and problem solving. Intentional managing of the marker also ensures all participants have an opportunity to talk and write. The visibility of standing whiteboards also gives teachers the chance to celebrate the multiple strategies used to tackle the task.

Strategies for student success- Room #406
Monday July 22, 2024 9:45am - 11:00am PDT

You Too Can Implement Phenomena Driven Science Curriculum- Room # 302
Monday July 22, 2024 9:45am - 11:00am PDT

With thematic instruction, a class explores a theme together over a few days, weeks, or months helping students learn and understand the content better. El museo de la arquitectura, is a workshop that will go over Vygostky's Sociocultural theory to connect the importance of a thematic unit in a second language acquisiton classroom. We want to promote positive outcomes by having clear goals that align with the CA World Language Standards. Furthermore, it will offer teachers hands-on-activities that will help them explore different teaching strategies as well as how to get students ready to use a rubric when taking an oral and/or a written exam, helping students reflect and evaluate their own achivements and to better understand why their evaluation receive the score that it doid and what they need to improve.
